You walk into the gym, sit down on the floor, and reach for your toes. Hold it thirty seconds. Switch sides. It feels responsible – like the grown-up thing to do before you touch a barbell. But that long, relaxed stretch right before your first heavy set might be the least useful part of your warm-up, and in some cases it’s quietly turning your strength down.

Why holding a stretch before you lift can backfire
When you hold a muscle in a long static stretch, you briefly reduce its ability to produce force. These get used interchangeably, but they’re different. Flexibility is how far a joint can be pushed passively – how deep you can be folded when something else does the work. Mobility is how far you can control a joint under your own power, actively. For lifting, mobility wins every time.
